Rumble & Twang at City Winery
Rumble & Twang is an all-star rockabilly band comprised of guitarist/pianist
Jimmy Vivino (music director of Conan O'Brien's television house band),
bassist Lee Rocker (formerly of the Stray Cats) and drummer Anton Fig (from David Letterman's television house band), along with any variety of
other notables, like Robert Gordon. Gordon
was not among the notables tonight at City
Winery, but the core trio of Rumble & Twang invited rockabilly guitarist
Buzz Campbell and blues harmonica
player Felix Cabrera on stage for most
of the set. All of these seasoned musicians played extraordinarily well, and Vivino
and Rocker alternated vocals on covers of songs originally recorded by the
Everly Brothers, Jerry Lee Lewis and many other pioneers of country rock. Did
the band play any new songs? If there were any new songs, they sounded like old
songs.
