Live Music Downtown: The Many Musical Flavors of October

There is an old cliche that says if you do not like the weather in New York, try tomorrow. A similar saying can be said about the now-flourishing live music scene in New York. These days, anyone in downtown Manhattan can savor many flavors of live music by walking just a few blocks. If you do not like one style of music, there is often another band nearby playing something different. A music lover can enjoy seven genres of music over seven nights. Here are but a few of the outstanding musicians performing in the past two weeks in downtown parks, sidewalk cafes, and even a game room and a fire escape.

The 15-piece Eyal Vilner Big Band played swing in Washington Square Park
The David Higgins Band came from South Carolina
to play pop-flavored rock at Hair of the Dog
The Meetles play 1960s pop songs at Tompkins Square Park

Cancion Franklin plays swampy blues at Marshall Stack
Menad Harkat performed Algerian Berber music at Nomad
Jill Fiore rocked hard on her Essex Street fire escape.
Allen Gogarty played acoustic rock at the Red Lion
Noboa sang electro-soul songs alongside billiards
and ping pong tables at Sour Mouse
Solid Goold played 1980s new wave at Tompkins Square Park
The Daniel Leonard Group played jazz at the Canary Club
Remy Le Boeuf & Martin Nevin played jazz at the Canary Club
The Gil Schwartz Duo played jazz at Caravan of Dreams
The cleverly-named ensemble called The [insert name here] Trio
played jazz at Tompkins Square Park
