Post Malone performed a free pop-up concert before thousands of fans at Times Square’s first permanent outdoor stage, TSX Entertainment, on July 18.
Two LED doors opened at 5:30 p.m., revealing the global superstar alone on stage, wearing a sleeveless white t-shirt and black jeans, equipped with only an acoustic guitar and a microphone.
Pedestrians making their way to public transportation after work could not miss his presence, as his performance on the small stage was projected simultaneously onto the massive billboard, as the music blared through a sound system louder than the traffic underneath him.
“I’m so happy the rain cleared up so we can hang out, ladies and gentlemen,” Malone told the onlookers watching from the nearby sidewalks and pedestrian plazas. “I just wanted to say to everybody who came to hang out I’m so grateful and so very honored to be kicking this off. This is the coolest venue in the f–king universe. I’m super nervous and super happy you guys came out.”
Malone began the 18-minute set singing one of his new songs, “Overdrive.” He followed with two of his biggest hits, “Circles” and “Sunflower.”
“I’m the first guy to do this, and I was super terrified because I know everyone has a busy day and a busy schedule,” Malone said. “I have a new album coming out later this month and I’m super excited to play you something off the new record that hasn’t been released yet. Hopefully, I don’t f–k it up.”
Malone performed the unreleased song, “Enough is Enough.” He then performed the lead single from the Austin album, “Chemical.” He concluded the set with “Congratulations.”
“I love you, New York City,” said Malone. “Thank you so much for hanging out with me tonight. I hope y’all have a great day. Stay safe, keep spreading love, keep being your beautiful selves, and keep kicking ass, ladies and gentlemen.”
Malone’s performance was in promotion of his fifth album, Austin, which will become available on July 28. So far, Malone has released three songs, “Overdrive,” “Chemical” and “Mourning,” from the 17-track album.
Malone is currently on a 26-date international concert tour, the “If Y'all Weren’t Here, I’d Be Crying” Tour, which does not yet include a New York City area show. The closest the tour will come to New York City is on July 23 at the Xfinity Theatre in Hartford, Connecticut.
The Post Malone concert was the first performance on the TSX Entertainment stage, which is built into an 18,000-square-foot electronic billboard. The event was sponsored by Raising Cane’s and H-D Collections by Harley-Davidson.
