Country music is bigger than ever in the New York City area, with Willie Nelson, Chris Stapleton, Dierks Bentley and other superstars bringing their tours into the area. Unknown to the larger public, New York City also has a network of smaller bars, clubs and venues that are drawing the country crowd on a nightly basis. Here are some of our favorite nightspots, plus a calendar of upcoming country, bluegrass and Americana performances.

Lucinda’s

Lucinda Williams’ newest venture is an East Village honky-tonk that features open mic, karaoke, bluegrass jams and country line dancing nights. The website does not yet list all the coming events, but one in September will be a live radio show featuring Kevn Kinney of Drivin’ & Cryin’ with Aaron Lee Tasjan.

Hill Country Barbecue Market

Hill Country Barbecue Market in Manhattan's Chelsea district is the place where central Texas food, live music and New York City come together – one tray of barbecue at a time. Check out the country line dancing on Tuesdays and the solo acoustic sets on Wednesdays.

Skinny Dennis

Located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Skinny Dennis is a down-home honky-tonk saloon pairing a woody space with beer, games and live country-rock music every night. The club’s website has not been working in recent weeks, but normally it lists all the upcoming shows.

Desert 5 Spot

Desert 5 Spot brings the rustic allure of Pioneertown and Cosmic Americana to Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Named after the colorful Mojave Desert flower and inspired by Joshua Tree hideouts, throwback roadside motels and western nostalgia, Desert 5 Spot is a watering hole that features live music, country dancing and even a mechanical bull.

Cowgirl Seahorse

Cowgirl Seahorse, located near the South Street Seaport, is a restaurant with southern home cooking, Frozen margaritas and other drinks, and live music by local country music and bluegrass artists. The website describes the restaurant and bar as “where Coney Island meets the rodeo.” Live bands play on Monday and Tuesday evenings.

Jalopy Theater

Since 2006, the Jalopy Theater has been a music venue and theater for folk and traditional roots music and art. The website lists performances, classes, festivals, and workshops. The venue even has musical instruments for sale.

The Manhattan Beat regularly lists the best live music events coming to the New York City area. The twice-weekly guide also celebrates via photographs some of the musicians who have performed locally in the past few days.

Everynight Charley recommends the following country, bluegrass and Americana concerts in the New York City area for the next three weeks. Consult the web site or social media of the venue for more information about a show, including location and directions, parking, ticket availability, show times, age restrictions, and COVID compliance.
