Under-the-Radar New York Musicians on the Rise

Singer Victoria Espinoza and guitarist Kay Bontempo, who lead Puzzled Panther, are Generation Z women in their mid 20s. They share their stage with three older men. The second guitarist is Eugene Hutz of Gogol Bordello, the bassist is audio engineer Alex Ryaboy, and the drummer is Brian Chase of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Together they create high energy rock that mixes polished melodies with chaotic post punk rage. The band released a self-titled EP in 2024 and a second EP, Fits of Serenity, this past July.

Raised in Manhattan, Grace Bergere first played the downtown circuit as a singer-songwriter. She now rocks a haunting, atmospheric sound with guitarist Robin Pahlman of Automaatio, bassist and harmonium Vern Woodhead of the band Woodhead, and drummer Bloody Rich Hutchins of Live Skull and the Art Gray Noizz Quintet. Bergere released her debut album, A Little Blood, this past May.

Formed in 2020, 95 Bulls is a Brooklyn/Queens-based band that blends garage-punk, psych, post-punk, and synth-wave into an electrifying sonic assault. The energy is loaded by driving, fuzzed out guitar leads, searing synthesizers, and in-your-face vocals. The band released a debut album, Go Home, in 2022, and a second album, Canadian Nightclub, in 2025.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Michael Daves grew up playing bluegrass. Although he has since moved north to Brooklyn, Southern roots permeate his music. He has taught music for more than 25 years. In 2011, he and Chris Thile received a nomination for a Grammy Award for their duo album of bluegrass standards, Sleep with One Eye Open. Daves’ most recent project is Early Morning Sun, released this month.

Brooklynite Jefferson Hamer is a guitarist, songwriter, traditional musician, and producer of studio recordings. He has collaborated with Anais Mitchell, Sarah Jarosz, Eamon O’Leary and other singer-songwriters. Liz Hanley is a Boston-raised and Brooklyn-based singer and fiddle player who can be found playing in New York City's Irish traditional seisiún circuit. Hamer released his most recent album, Gullwing, in 2024. Hanley released her second and most recent solo album, Paint This Life, in January of this year.

The Bushwick Mountain Boys formed in New York City to satisfy the four musicians' urge for tight harmonies in bluegrass music. The band in comprised of Grammy-nominated guitarist Chris Luquette, bassist Shane McGeehan, mandolinist Cesar Moreno, and banjoist Ellery Marshall. The band's debut album, Live in Paris, was recorded during a 2023 tour and released in 2024.
